Abstract

Introduction: Today there are many physiotherapeutic approaches in the management of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). The aim of the present article is to expose the principles of the Reeducation Global Posture (RGP) method in the treatment of AS. The effectiveness of that treatment has been exposed in previous studies performed by our research group from the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Alcorcon, Madrid.  Reeducation Global Posture method in Ankylosing Spondylitis: The RGP method claims the existence of a functional relationship among the muscles by means of the existence of diverse muscle chains (anterior and posterior body muscle chain, antero-internal muscle chain of the scapular and pelvic girdle, etc.). These muscle chains are responsible of the postural attitude of these patients. In AS patients it is very common to see the following posture: loss of cervical curve with prorusion of the jaw, thoracic kyphosis, loss of lumbar curve, protraction of the scapular girdle, and flexion and internal rotation of the pelvic girdle. According to the RGP, the aforementioned posture is consequence of the muscle chains' retraction. Therefore, following the clinical reasoning principle, that postural attitude should be correctly treated by means of the RGP method. Adaptations of the RGP method to the AS: Any used posture in the RGP might be addressed with AS patients. However, we have to adapt that method as the RGP is focused on the muscle chains' retraction management. Due to AS patients showed a loss of lumbar curse, during the RGP postures, we should incentive to each patient to adopt a normal lordotic curvature of the lumbar re¬
ion. Furthermore, we have used some RGP postures, such as the sitting wall position, in order to focus the active alienation of the total spine, maintaining the muscle chain tension during all the time.
Other exercises: In the present article we will expose other exercises focusing on the joint mobility, with the aim to improve the arthrokinematics of the lumbar region. We will use the principles of the McKenzie method.
