EFFECTIVENESS OF THE LE MÉTAYER METHOD IN INFANTILE CEREBRAL PALSY

Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of the physiotherapy treatment based on the method by Le Metayer in children with infantile cerebral palsy (ICP) in their motor development. Material and methods: quasi-experimental study. The sample consisted of 10 children, 4 boys and 6 girls, diagnosed with CP, who received physiotherapy treatment based on the method by Le Metayer in A space Center of Jaén, with aged between 1and 8 years. Exclusion criteria were to belong to the group of big affected, to suffer epileptic attacks and subjects that they were suffering another pathology that it had prevented them from coming to the center to receive physiotherapy treatment.
he treatment consisted of one session of one hour, 2 or 3 times a week for 25 days, between of 31.03.2008 to 28.04.2008. Functional evaluation was realized at the beginning and end of the study period using a questionnaire of development motor of 90 items provided by physiotherapists of A space Center; the maximum obtainable score was 360 points equivalent to a complete development. Two statistical software's, 1,2 CaEst and Open Stat, were used for the analysis of data. Results: after treatment received, 9 subjects did not show significant differences in motor questionnaire, only one subject showed improvement in motor development with a final punctuation of 284 points, with an improvement of 1 point from his first evaluation. Conclusion: the application of the method by Le Metayer in our studied patients, showed no significant changes in motor development; these results may be due to the short duration of the study and characteristics of this pathology.
