Abstract

In this study the existence of a social and cultural dimension in the field of physiotherapy is recognized. It includes, among others, the notions developed by recent sociology and anthropology of the body, the social and cultural perceptions of disabilities and handicaps, the organization of support groups, self-help groups, etc.
For the daily practice of physiotherapy, we currently have specific measuring, observation and quantification tools - diagnostic method. This situation contrasts with that related to the social aspects in physiotherapy.  In this article the alternatives to the types of social investigation based on empirical data are expounded. A qualitative-abductive analysis or interpretative procedures are key elements for the achievement of a methodology that can explain this hidden aspect of physiotherapy.
There are some precedents in the study of corporeity seen as an individual's external dimension both in philosophical anthropology and in physiotherapy itself. These aspects complement others that may help in the understanding of the specific features of each group or individual case according to the cultural and social domain that those belong to.
