THE USE OF INFRARED THERMOGRAPHY IN RELATION TO OSTEOPATHY AND MANUAL THERAPY: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Objective: to observe the relationship between thermography and osteopathic and manual therapy. Material and method: a systematic review was carried out following the PRISMA recommendations. The data bases and editorial platforms consulted were: Pubmed, EBSCO, Biblioteca Virtual de la Salud, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and PEDro, the last search being carried out in December 2020. Randomized clinical trials and controlled clinical trials were selected, including a total of 5 articles in this study. Data extraction: the study selection process was carried out au-tomatically and manually and included all the articles that analyzed the use of thermography in osteopathic practice or in manual therapy. Two independent researchers identified the characteristics and outcome measures of the included studies, and by a third reviewer were assessed the results that raised doubts. Data synthesis: the Jadad and PEDro scales were used to assess the methodological quality of the studies. Results: the studies were divided and grouped into three blocks depending on the anatomical region, 3 studies in the cervical region, 1 in the dorsal region, 1 in the lumbar region. The main variables analyzed were temperature, pain and joint ranges, showing in most cases a direct correlation between thermographic changes and the variables analyzed. Conclusions: due to the limited evidence in quantitative terms and moderate in qualitative terms, more studies are needed to exhaustively determine the role of thermography in relation to the techniques of osteopathy and manual therapy.
