EFFECTS OF PHYSIOTHERAPY ON THE UPPER LIMB OF WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER POST MASTECTOMY. A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Introduction: breast cancer is the most prevalent in women. The most common treatments are surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or the use of drugs. These treatments cause side effects both in the upper limb and glo-bally and Physiotherapy can play an important role in their management. Objective: to investigate the effects of Physiotherapy on the affected upper limb in women who underwent surgery for breast cancer through a systema-tic review of the scientific literature. Material and method: a literature review was conducted in March 2021 in Medline, Cinahl, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. We included randomized clinical trials in English or Spanish that assessed the upper limb of post-mastectomy women without metastases, published from 2016 to the present.
he PEDro scale was used to assess methodological quality. Results: thirteen randomized clinical trials were analyzed considering the characteristics of the sample and the physiotherapeutic interventions in the affected upper limb. Positive effects were obtained on pain, range of motion, strength and lymphoedema volume variables. However, both the patients and the interventions applied in the articles are very heterogeneous. Conclusion: Physiotherapy obtains satisfactory results in the side effects of mastectomy in the upper limb, highlighting that in most cases several physiotherapy techniques are combined.
