Abstract

Introduction: total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a surgical intervention globally used to treat degenerative joint proces-ses that cause pain and functional disability, but which causes post-surgical sequelae. Objective: to test the efficacy of Physiotherapy and therapeutic exercise in a subject undergoing knee arthroplasty replacement. Material and method: a post-surgical intervention was performed in the Physiotherapy area of the Hospital Puerta de Andalucía- Hospital Uni-versitario de Jaén. Pain, range of motion, strength and muscular, nervous and articular condition of the knee were pre-viously assessed. The physiotherapy questionnaires used as predictors of functionality and quality of life were Time Up and Go Test (TUG Test), Five X Sit to Stand Up (FXSST), SF-12 and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteo-arthritis Index (WOMAC). Results: a progressive decrease in pain, an improvement in range of motion, strength and knee function was observed, and the questionnaires analysed appear to show an improvement in functionality and qua-lity of life. Conclusion: it is postulated that Physiotherapy and therapeutic exercise are effective in combating the post-surgical sequelae of knee arthroplasty surgery, allowing the patient's reintegration into a functional and pain-free living environment.
