Abstract

Objective: the main objective of the study is to analyze the effectiveness of early intervention for improving postoperative patient status. A secondary aim was to analyze the effect of other outcomes of the evolution on patient ‘s evolution. Material and methods: quasi-experimental study. The sample consisted of 16 patients. Patients were collected for five weeks in the Hospital Neurotraumatológico Ciudad de Jaén for a surgery intervention as a result of a primary hip fracture. There were excluded cases of pathological fractures or cases without prescription of physical therapy treatment. The sample was measured in the Barthel scale and Tinetti scale at the beginning and at the end of treatment. Furthermore, age, sex, surgery and the number of sessions were taken as secondary variables. The intervention consisted of implementing the protocol for hip fracture in the center where the survey was conducted. Results: there was a statistically significant improvement in scores, for patients registered with the Barthel scale (p = 0.0427), and Tinetti scale (p = 0.0036). Men had higher average improvement than women in the Tinetti scale (p = 0.0139). Total hip replacement group was also the best average improvement in the Tinetti scale (p = 0020). Age, initial score, and the number of rehabilitation sessions together, were significant predictors for the final score in Tinetti (R2 = 0.9341). The same outcomes with mobilization sessions instead of re-education of the walk ability were also predictors for the final score in Tinetti (r = 0.9192). Conclusions: the physical intervention was effective for the improvement of the two scales measured. We suggest further studies to confirm the results of this treatment on the physical therapist in a post-operative period.
