Abstract

Background: dyspareunia is one of the most current female sexual dysfunctions. Many causes, alone or combined, might produce this symptomatology, and some of them could be treated by means of Physiotherapy, obtaining palliative or curative results. Objectives: to study dyspareunia prevalence among female Physiotherapy students from the University of Seville, to know the sample´s symptomatic profile, to identify the possible etiology of this sexual problem and to analyze our sample´s knowledge about this syndrome. Material and methods: the sample is composed by 83 women between 18 and 35 years old. The information was recollected by a survey and an EVA scale.
Results: of those 83 women, 34.9 % showed pain at the beginning, during or after coitus, most of them since their first intercourse. A high percentage of them were not able to make a correct definition for dyspareunia, and only three of them visited a specialist. Any relationship between dyspareunia and the analyzed causes was found. Conclusions: dyspareunia is a frequent problem among the studied population. There is a big ignorance in our sample about dyspareunia, and maybe, that is the reason why there is such low percentage of medical consultations related to this syndrome.
