PHYSIOTHERAPY AFTER ELBOW ARTHROLYSIS: A CASE REPORT

Background: radial head and neck fractures mean account for a third of elbow fractures. Surgery is a likely treatment option. Physiotherapy treatment must prevent joint stiffness, which is the main postsurgical complication. Aims and objectives: to highlight the importance of early physical therapy treatment in a case of a Mason type III radial head fracture, in which the patient was reoperated by elbow arthrolysis, after the bad functional results accomplished by the first surgery. Case report: a radial head fracture case was studied. An initial assessment of pain, mobility and strength was performed, and the results were later compared with those of the final evaluation after 16 weeks of treatment, starting the day after surgery. The treatment was divided into 2 different stages according to clinical development. Outcome: the results were satisfactory. The patient was able to resume professional and daily living activities as the joint and muscles gained similar mobility and strength as the other arm. Conclusion: this case shows the importance of implementing early physiotherapy treatment after Mason type III radial head fractures.
